VA Offers More Info to Aid Pending GI Bill Decision
March 24, 2009
The VA recently posted specific scenarios (case studies) to help servicemembers and veterans see how the New Post 9/11 GI Bill compares to the Montgomery GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill for Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR).
As most of our readers are aware, servicemembers and veterans will soon have to decide which GI Bill program to use to achieve their education and career goals. Since this choice is irrevocable, it is extremely important for servicemembers and veterans who have served more than 90 days on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, to pay close attention to the details of each program. Most will find the New Post-9/11 GI Bill will serve them well. However, due to certain Post-9/11 GI Bill program limitations and restrictions, this is not true for all.
Visit the following VA web pages to see a list of specific scenarios which may help determine which program best suits each student's needs:
- Case Studies Showing Differences Between the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty
- Case Studies Showing Differences Between the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Reserve GI Bills

JP - Same here. Served '80 to '08, and never enrolled in anything, so this is a good deal for me.

Curly, feel your pain. USNA grads (76 or 77) got no Vietnam GI bill; and then, was told we were not eligible for VEAP. Montgomery GI bill came along and you had to convert from VEAP, but ... DIDN'T HAVE VEAP! So ... got no GI Bill benefits.
I stayed on coninuously for 27+ years, including 3+ after 9/11. Do I now finally qualify for something?

Has the Honorable Filner, given up the fight for online courses this year? Some of us vets are 100% DISABLED and not able to attend traditonal school. I read on April 2nd, that he was still trying to push for this. When are the changes set in stone? Thanks in advance

What about the vets that are living in foreign countries? How is the VA going to determine what their amounts will be? As of right now no decision(s) have been made.

My husband was deployed in 2006 for 18 months, 12 out of country. He was AGR when he deployed to Kuwait. My question is, "Is he elegible to transfer benefits to our son this fall for colleg?" I know AGR are not elegible, but if he was activiated to Kuwait, doesn't that qualify him?

If I only have one month of GiBill left and I switch to Vocational Rehabilitation before it runs out, can I switch to the Post 911 Gibill and how much time will I have with it?

None of the scenarios seem to cover my situation. I served AD from 88-98 and participated in MGIB. I used a small portion of MGIB and retain most of my eligibility. Joined the Guard in 04 as traditional Guardsman. Activated and deployed for 18months (post 9/11). Do I get the option of choosing to change over to the Yellow Ribbon or must I continue with MGIB since I've already used a portion? Which would benefit me more?

Mike - The quick answer is no. The Post 9/11 GI Bill is only for those who have served on active duty (including mobilized Guard and Reserve) since 9/11/2001.
In addition the GI Bill is only for education and training. It has no health care benefits.

In this new, if I understand clearly, are there any provisions for those of us that are prior service (80-83/83-92)with regard to schooling and/or medical? As was previously mentioned I too think that Vets should get schooling any time, perhaps a one time option for life but not limited to a time frame. When I got out there was no big explanations given, you were essentially handed a packet and that was it.
You get back home and are trying to acclimate back into the world let lone having any idea as to what to go to school for.
Thanks for your time.

What ever happened to Senator Filner's trying to get the stipend for online courses? Is there supposed to be a vote on this anytime soon? August 1st rolls around soon and would love to find out if I can apply to the school with the program that would best suit my needs. I called the VA about other issues and was told they are in training every week for the new GI Bill and DO NOT have the answers to every question. Thanks for any input or advice.

THE NEW GI BILL SUCKS!!
IF I CONVERTED TO THE NEW BI BILL FROM CHAPTER 1607 I WOULD RECEIVE LESS MONEY!!
THE NEW GI BILL SUCKS!!
THEY SHOULD HAVE BUMPED UP THE AMOUNT THEY PAY OUT AND THEY WOULDN'T BE SPENDING BILLIONS ON IMPLEMENTING A NEW GI BILL AND COULD HAVE GIVEN THAT MONEY TO THE VETERANS!!!

Brandon and Steve -
The VA has not made it clear yet. There is a provision for getting an additional 12 months of Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. But if you are eligible it will be due to a separate enlistment term. In other words, you will have to be eligilbe under for the Post-9/11 due to a different period of enlistment than the one that qualified you for the MGIB.
Your best CURRENT source of info is 1-888-GIBILL-1. Anything else is rumor or speculation until the VA says otherwise.

My G.I. Bill runs out in a few months. I still have 3 semesters left in school before i can recieve my bachlors. Are there any programs that will finance the rest of my education?

I am a vet that served in Operation Enduring Freedom. I have exhausted the G.I. Bill benefits given to members before the bill was changed. Am I eligible for any of the benefits under the revised bill?

You too? I thought I was the only one. Vets should get tuition assistance, anytime.

This one'll be easy--I don't have any GI Bill benefits. I enlisted during the VEAP days when counselors recommended against enrolling. Screwed me out of later getting into the Montgomery GI Bill. Thanks guys. This one will be great for me even if it doesn;t cover 100%. Better than nothing.
My only word of advice: Before you start complaining and asking a lot of really stupid questions, go to the VA web site (www.va.gov) and read the info on the Post 9/11 GI Bill for yourself. I know, novel concept, but there's no time like the present to learn something new.
